Teachers are encouraged to but not required to earn A M@YS U points during the 2017-2018 school year to support their own professional learning. Teachers may use the guide below to assist with the selection of professional development opportunities.
If teachers would like to receive 1 MSDE CPD credit for their participation in A M@YS U activities, then they must earn a total of 30 A M@YS U points. Teachers must submit all of the required documentation and adhere to all deadlines in order to receive credit.
*Participating in A M@YS U activities is an excellent way to support professional development evidence for Domain IV.

Meet with the STAT teacher, either one on one or in a small group, to learn about a new instructional topic or strategy that supports your needs as a teacher, and/or the needs of your students. Examples of topics may include, higher level questioning, behavior managements, small group instruction, etc.
(30 minutes per point with a 2 point maximum per session) Documentation: T & L Documentation Form Identify an area of need related to either your professional practice or the needs of your students. Meet with the STAT teacher to research and explore resources to support this need, then follow up by co-planning/teaching a lesson designed to support the identified needs.
(30 minutes per point with a 2 point maximum per session) Documentation: T & L Documentation Form Attend a Breakfast Bunch session to collaborate with colleagues across grades levels to discuss and share information on instructional topics. These sessions blend collaborative discussion with professional development to increase teacher knowledge and build capacity across the staff.
Documentation: Exit Ticket Listen to a podcast or TED Talk on a specific instructional topic. Following the podcast/TED Talk reflect on new learning and potential classroom/instructional implications. Podcasts or TED Talks must be from the approved list in order to receive A M@YS U points.
Documentation: T & L Documentation Form Attend and participate in a live #mayschat Twitter Chat with other Mays Chapel teachers and staff. These sessions are designed to provide teachers with convenient interactive PD on a variety of instructional topics. Teachers respond to a series of questions focued on a specific instructional topic. This format allows for cross grade collaboration and helps to build capacity across the staff. Viewing the record of a #mayschat will not count for A M@YS U points.
Documentation: Exit Ticket Participate in a vertical planning meeting (must include a teacher from the grade below and a teacher from the grade above) with an instructional focus.
Documentation: T & L Documentation Form Participate in a planning session with Special Area, Special Education, or Resource Staff with an instructional focus.
Documentation: T & L Documentation Form Partner with another teacher or school to share/learn a new instructional strategy, plan for implementation, and reflect after the strategy is implemented.
Documentation: T & L Documentation Form With another teacher or as a grade team, identify an area of need that will help to develop and implement behaviors and instructional “best” practice that contribute to a learner-centered environment for ALL students. Plan the lesson utilizing school lesson planning format and Learner Centered Environment Professional Learning Tool. Once the lesson is planned participants will observe the lesson being taught in the first classroom. Following the lesson participants will debrief and adjust the plan accordingly before observing the lesson taught in the next classroom. Each lesson study must be pre-approved by the STAT Teacher and/or Administrator in order to arrange substitute coverage for participant observations.
Documentation: Lesson Study Planning and Documentation Form Participate in a Book Club led by the STAT teacher, admin., or designated resource staff. Book clubs will take place twice a year, once in the winter and then again in the spring for a period of 6 weeks. During the 6 week session participants will read a book designated by the facilitator and then meet 3 times throughout the course of the 6 week session in order to discuss and reflect on new learning and possible applications for instruction.

Attend a T4T session to learn about a new digital resource, technology integration idea, or digital “best” practice.
Documentation: Exit Ticket Create a H2H video or screencast tutorial in order to model appropriate use of a digital tool or resource. These H2H videos can be designed for teachers, students, and/or parents to use. Meet with the STAT teacher, either one on one or in a small group, to learn about new ways to integrate P21 skills in the learner-centered classroom. Examples of topics may include, personalizing and customizing instruction for students using BCPS One features, implementing collaborate group roles and routines, integrating digital content, tools, resources etc.
(30 minutes per point with a 2 point maximum per session) Documentation: T & L Documentation Form Attend and participate in a live webinar session to learn about a new digital resource, technology integration idea, or digital “best” practice. Viewing a webinar recordings will not count for A M@YS U points. Participants could view the recording though and submit a personal reflection on new learning for 1 point.

Meet with the STAT teacher, either one on one or in a small group, explore and evaluate examples of learner centered spaces in order to refine classroom environments. Examples may include, taking a learning walk through another classroom or school with specific focus areas, utilizing photos, videos, or model lesson to observe how space contributes to the success of ALL students, etc.

Take some time to reflect on your own professional practice, and the professional development you have experienced during your time at Mays Chapel. Capture a reflection, in writing or video, about how your teaching practices have changed as a result of your use of the learner-centered environment tool, Lighthouse, and/or BCPS STAT. These reflections will be used for the BCPS Lighthouse Website as well our Mays Chapel Lighthouse page and A M@YS U website. Documentation: Personal Reflection Form

(Applications to present that are accepted for summer presentation will be accepted for A M@YS U credit as long as documentation is included and submitted by the deadline.)
